Walk 10 Bay Run Walk

Meet in Thompson Street to head down towards the bay along Henley Drive.

THE BAY RUN  WALK .........

Dear Pippa, Moira, Kate, Linzi  - who walked today
and Wendy, Jane, Donna, Marie-Claire who were unable to be there
and Lynne who joined us for the morning walk.

I copied the following  snippet for us because of all the suburbs we didn't notice on the way:  The Bay Run Fun Run by the way takes place next weekend.

"The Bay Run is a popular pathway that encircles much of Iron Cove and is located in the inner-western suburbs of SydneyAustralia. The Bay Run is particularly popular with joggers, walkers and cyclists who enjoy the pleasant waterside scenery whilst participating in exercise. It is 7 kilometres long and passes through the suburbs of RozelleLilyfieldHaberfieldFive DockRodd PointRussell Lea and Drummoyne. The Bay Run provides excellent views of Iron Cove for its entire course as it constantly hugs the shoreline. The Bay Run plays host to the annual Bay Run fun run, a community event that brings people together in the name of health, fun and exercise."
We took one and a half hours around the Bay Run loop excluding coffee time. Brisk walking, icy wind, swallows, some darters, two little wrens, one lorikeet, Views to the distant Iron Cove Bridge as we got closer and closer until we crossed it

Earlier, as Pippa drove to our parking spot I spied Lynne, my co-Grandmother taking my/our Grand-daughter to school. She declined the yelled invitation to join us for coffee later but soon afterwards she suddenly happily appeared on the sidewalk as her school reading class had been cancelled thus enabling her to join us for the walk itself Lynne, I need tell you was a great inspiration for me to get a walking group going as she has done this for several years. She is partly responsible for us.

FYI: Once onto Henley Marine Drive we passed, in consecutive order:

  • Montague Park,
  • Nield Park
  • Rodd Point
  • Timbrell Park
  • Robson Park,
  • Leichhardt Park
  • Callen Park
  • King George Park
We never deviating more than 20 metres from the water. We also passed

  • Dobroyd Sailing Club
  • UTS Rowing Club
  • Leichhardt Rowing Club
  • Drummoyne Pool
  • Drummoyne Rowing Club
The island in the middle of Iron Cove is Rodd Island which I think Pippa said could be hired.

Some interesting Trivia -The Bay Run seems to be under general control of Leichhardt Council but the walking paths in defined areas are controlled by Canada Bay, Ashfield, Leichhardt Councils, the Sydney Harbour Foreshore, RTA control (RTA does the Bridge bit)

Walk 9 - Cockatoo Island/Biennale

Walk 9 - Cockatoo Island - Biennale 2012

The Group met at the Greenwich Wharf bright and early to board the Ferry across the Parramatta River to Cockatoo Island. Once again raincoats and umbrellas were on and up against the rain  from a bleak old grey sky.

Biennale art and exhibits were the attractions for our visit today while serious walking took a rest.  The presentations of imaginative  Wind Chimes, mysterious glow-worm lights in the dog-leg tunnel,  great white paper clouds, flowers, feathers,  glittery globes, shadow man, a landscape timber wave, industrial turbine and engines sounds of yesteryear, resin roots golden green crater, more paper, more  clouds of white, fluffy feathers folding, silent vellum inflating lanterns, sand mandalas, snipped steel container curvaceous cutouts,  flickering fantasy, oysters and cups - all designed to delight the public with  creativity, imagination and often with much painstaking work.

A fair bit of solid walking around the island. was to be had as we wandered from one exhibit to another.   Cockatoo Island was a new experience to some of our walkers today
Coffee alongside the imaginative palette tables at the Cafe  where we were eyed by a hundred seagulls hoping to scoop in and beak off a crumb or two.

8. Ku-ring-Gai Board Walk Bobbin Head

Here we go again - Walk  No 8.  17th July 2012.

There are a  couple of shorter walks in this wonderful National Park north of Sydney -  close enough for easy access for bush walks, picnics, boating, kayaking, cycling, exploring, wildlife, birdwatching and general relaxation.

The Mangroves Boardwalk took us along Cockle Creek which we crossed by the cable-stayed foot bridge.  There were plenty of cliff and water views with stunning relections in the water.   A very pretty walk.   The boardwalk took us through the mangroves and salt marsh towards a small Rainforest area  at the end of the path.
Nearby and through the bushes a  very busy bush turkey scraped and scuffed and scarcely bothered to acknowledge our presence. Head down, scuff, scuff, scrape, pyramid  mound nests.
Linzi, Kate, Moira and Donna continued walking from Bobbin Head to Apple Tree Bay.

Present on this walk, Pippa, Linzi, Kate, Moira, Pippa, Carolle

Walk 7 - Anzac Bridge, Blackwattle Bay, Bicentennial Park

Crescent str Mural

Carolle learnt a lesson today:  carry a good map! We needed our map.  all the same we managed an excellent exploratory walk in and around the areas mentioned above.
We found our way past the Fish Markets having initially walked from the city across Pyrmont Bridge.   The walking track kept close to Rozelle and Blackwattle Bays with wide magical views of  the city skyline, the nearby marinas with  evidence of old shipping yards,  Federal Park, Bicentennial Park the looming beautiful Anzac Bridge, on past the Crescent murals, along James Craig Road to ascend the steps spiralling round to reach the Anzac soldier.  Up on the Anzac Bridge we were able to look down on the old Glebe Island Bridge, open then  to gaze dizzily upwards at the vast magnificent but elegant cables fanning  upwards to form the fine delicate strands seen from afar.  Coffee in a Pyrmont street cafe.

Walk 6: City Sculpture Walk

Sydney City Sculpture Walk

This walk put together for us by Pippa was inspired by an article by Bruce Elder in the S.M.Herald.
About twenty artworks were commissioned from Australian and International artists to form a circuit through the city for  the year 2000, the  City Sculpture Walk.  We didn't manage to see all but our walk included a few extras along the way  such as the  laneway Bird Cages near Angel Place.
Starting at Milsons Pt steps  we proceeded at a nice pace across the bridge on a sunny day.   After 20minutes we paused at the Cahill Lookout where Pippa provided information sheets on the Sculpture  Walk.   The glass elevator was a joyful new experience for four out of six of us with quite the  best views in Sydney for a precious few seconds as we flipped downwards in our glass cage!
It was at the Customs House where we got the first of our viewings of the listed sculptures.

Sculptures viewed were: Tankstream (Lynne Roberts-Goodwin),Palm and Magnolia (Bronwyn Oliver)

Veil of Trees (Janet Laurence and Jisuk Han), Memory is Creation without End (Kimio Tsuchiya.  This work interesting in that it comprises relics from demolished buidings eg. old Pyrmont Bridge.  the Tarpein Way is but a thin veneer covering the Harbour Tunnel.  Folly for Mrs Macquarie (Fiona Hall) and Passage (Anne Graham) representing Georgian bowls.
